Lanolin Alcohols are the unsaponifiable fraction of anhydrous lanolin. Lanolin alcohols are complex mixtures of cholesterol, lanosterol, agnosterol and their di-hydro derivatives, plus straight chain and branched chain aliphatic alcohols with a mean molecular weight of approximately 370.
All of the Lanolin Alcohols are powerful W/O emulsifiers.
Cosmetic and pharmaceutical grades are available.
Liquid Absorption Base (LAB) is a selected blend of lanolin alcohols in a liquid paraffin.
It is a powerful W/O emulsifier and O/W emulsion stabiliser. It is used in all types of emulsions providing a smooth skin feel with conditioning and moisturising properties.
Lanolin Fatty Acid is produced from the hydrolysis of lanolin. It is a highly complex mixture of fatty acids, composed of roughly 40% by weight of straight chain acids, 20% of branched chain acids and approximately 40% of hydroxy acids. The majority of this mixture of fatty acids is saturated with carbon chain lengths from C8 to C40 that form a hard, waxy, buttery coloured solid.
Lanolin Fatty Acid is generally used as a neutralised soap in applications like O/W creams and shaving soaps.
